Wearside Golf Club

I have just become a junior member at Wearside Golf Club i enjoy every minute of it. The club house is well kept. The 1st hole is a par 3 167 yards from yellow tee with bunkers and front right and left a good opening hole. The 7th is a par 3 150 yards,one of my best holes with a stream running throw it with the river wear running down the side. The 18th is a par 5 466 yards long, hit it 200 yards up the fairway and a 90* turn with 240 yards to the green.

I found Wearside to be a very open, but very challenging course. Many shots are played blind which makes for constant reference to your course planner (trust me, you'll need one!). Greens were superb and loved the little par 3 with a 100 foot drop in front of it! Only downside, not very well signposted around the holes (played one of the holes twice!) and the 18th is a disappointing dogleg finishing hole with only a 7 iron drive available to get you in position for a long finish. Apart from that, i recommend you give it a try.

My first exposure to Golf was at the, I presume original, Wearside Golf Club,
located in Pallion. It was probably 1942 and I was a young boy (rascal) of eight
years, on my way to Claxheugh Rock or South Hylton. I believe we were discouraged
by the members from crossing the course, but we were reasonably safe as we could
easily outscamper those old men.
The only real danger was perhaps to be recognised by someone like the enormous
Mr Naisby, the Butcher from St Lukes Terrace, who would be sure to tell my Dad.
I started playing Golf when I came to Canada and now, after close to a fifty year
love affair with the "grand old game" can safely say "that the older I get, the better
I was'
I believe Mr Naisby's youngest son, (John ??) may still be a member
