Played here for the first time recently although travelling north in driving rain I was tempted to give it a miss. Glad I didn't though - this is a wonderful course and lived up to all the good reports from previous contributors.
The rain relented as we passed Troon and on arrival at the course the sun came out and remained with us for the rest of the afternoon making for a fabulous day's golf apart from a sea mist which suddenly descended as we played the 4th and 5th but then disappeared just as quickly. I suppose that's part and parcel of the pleasure of playing a course like this. Add in the stunning views of the Firth of Clyde and the Isles of Arran and you're playing on a stage that excites all your senses.
The front 9 have a more inland feel to them but there's a loop of 4 holes or so around the turn which change the course into a real links set up with holes playing hard against the coast. There was no wind the day we played and the course was in excellent nick given the prevailing weather. The greens are first class and the bunkers, as our American cousins would say, are "awesome". Took me 4 shots to get out of one particular beauty.
With a standard visitor's green fee of £45 it's not cheap but I tell you what, it's worth every penny. We were made to feel really welcome by the guys in the pro shop and during the round a ranger said he was keeping his eye on us to make sure we were finding our way round ok. Go play.
New pro (two days), members and clubhouse staff gave us a terrific welcome - as has every course we've played up here. Course was in perfect condition. Lucky to have had a still day. Fairways, tees and greens could not be faulted. Views superb. Loved it. Can imagine that in the wind it would be a severe challenge. Well worth the green fee.
An absolute pleasure to visit this club and one of the most beautiful courses I have ever played. We were fortunate to play it under proper links conditions, between 15-20 mph winds and a spot of rain on two holes. It made the course very challenging indeed but with such gorgeous views the score is not very important anymore.
The bunkers are the best I have ever played from, including some 5* courses in Vegas. The greens were fantastic especially for being October. The layout is great and make sure you get your points on the board before the last 8 holes or you will be struggling if it's windy.
At £40 it is an absolute steal!
I played this fine course last week for the sixth or seventh time. The condition was excellent as always. I've been very lucky in that each and every time I have visited the weather has been perfect, with little or no wind. A stiff westerly would put ifve to eight shots on your score.
I highly recommend W. Kilbride for the condition, layout and warm welcome extended.
Looking foeward to my next visit.
Played on the last day of the winter green fee offer for 2004/5 and it was good value for the £20 paid. The opening fairways, set out on the higher ground, away from the coast, were very disappointing, as they were sodden and covered in small pools of water. The round got better with a nice little loop of four holes around the turn then the real links element came in to play as we turned for home into the wind to play the last half dozen holes along the Firth of Clyde shoreline. Greens were quite 'mushy' so putting was often a lottery. Much work is being done to introduce more yellow gorse along a number of fairway fringes and many greenside bunkers have been relined so the club is certainly trying very hard to improve the course. The best part of our day out was the very warm welcome in the proshop and clubhouse - prices here for lunch were very reasonable and there was a very friendly, informal atmosphere in the lounge. I would want the greens and opening fairways to be in better condition if I returned to pay a full green fee in the summer, though.
An absolute pleasure to play this course and enjoy the stunning views on every hole over to Arran. The course had been slightly rejigged for winter play to avoid the first few holes being over used but we found the course to be in tremendous condition for February. Staff and members were very friendly and if you get a chance while playing in Ayrshire and fancy a game off the well worn famous course route then this should be the one for you. £19 was a bargain.
A very enjoyable course especially in summer. Facilities within the club house and course are excellent and staff are really friendly. you must try to play on a nice day as the wind and rain cause havoc to your game.
We were recommended this course because of the views!!! Well in between the hailstones and driving rain the views of Arran were good, if it had not been for the gales that were blowing all the way round we might have enjoyed this course.
DO choose to play here when the weather is OK because the wind plays havoc with your game other wise. An illustration of this is 350 yds drive with the wind 90 yds if your not!!! The course has good greens and is in nice condition, it is not difficult or that long and I would recommend it on a nice day. Staff at the course are very very friendly.
We waited all week for a good day, forcast said 07/03/02, thursday, 'no rain, but windy',and it was. Beautiful Links course, great views, greens in very good condition considering the time of year. Testing with the wind, but not overly so. Hope to visit again in the summer. Very enjoyable.
Not a difficult course on a nice day but with the wind and the rain prepare for a test of golfing ability, the course also supplies good food and impressive facilities
Quite simply one of the best courses I have ever played. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys the game without it being too testing
very nice course, not too tough, excellent seaside views, especially of Arran and very friendly members. Is worth playing.
Links type course, not too tough, excellent condition with terrific views of Arran. Members are very friendly. Very enjoyable course.
