What a pleasure - after North Leeds muddy clay to play on a dry downland course after a deluge! With winds gusting the course was tough especially the narrow early part - scores disappeared! The grass was springy, the greens did not divot much, only two winter greens, and the challenge was exciting. Long par 4s interspersed with tricky uphill and downhill par 3s - how I managed a blind birdie chipping from yards below the green at the eighth I will never know! At the end of a cold afternoon as the light faded, a wind assissted par 5 16th would have seen Tiger drive it at 500 yards round a blind corner! And the final two par 3s were too much as tiredness set in. But the clubhouse was excellent and welcoming, the fee right, and the golf fair.... and dry in the worst of weather. Go to it.
Played the 'Royal' in late October and although the weather was atrocious the course had remained in good condition. The greens were superb. The only frustrating part of Royal Eastbourne are the sloping fairways. A nice drive on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 14th holes, will see your ball roll into the rough. Also not quite sure about the tee shot on the second (A drive over a busy road with no protection to the cars). Apart from these slight anoyances the course although not massively long was certainly a good test, particularly the front nine.
