Played here for the first time recently. I'd rate the course as average. There are some really nice holes. The opening par 3 is a beauty - don't miss it to the left like I did - you'll be in death valley :) and the par 5 with the railway OB along the right and a sloped fairway left to right is memorable. However, there are a lot of dull par fours that seem to blend into each other, and I wasn't a fan of the big crossroads in the middle of the course - finding your way around is a bit of a PITA. Greens were very well kept and the rough wasn't that penurious. I found a couple of stray tee shots pretty easily (not bad considering my propensity for smearing them twenty yards into the trees) and it never felt like the course was punishing me overly for waywardness. Be advised - if you're a duffer, or not as sprightly as you used to be, hire a buggy. It's called Purley Downs for a reason - you'll be struggling through the back nine up and down some of the par 4 slogs if you;re not hale and hearty. Overall, I enjoyed the round - but I'm not sure it's worth the price. Probably works out better for you if you're a member and play regularly.

I first played Purley downs before christmas, and i liked the course and the people so much i joined before the end of Jan. The course is a real gem compared to alot of other London courses i have played, the undulating fairways make a nice change from the standard flat and long London layouts. There are a few really interesting holes with a couple of driveable par fours, which i think every course should have. The green fees are well worth the round and the pro shop is well stocked especially with putters, where they will bend one to fit you perfectly, shame i just bought one before i joined but i am sure it will run out of magic soon haha The club house like people before said is right on the road but sit round the back on the balcony and you would think your in the countryside not London.

Lovely setting, hard to believe you are in the middle of Croydon! The clubhouse is right next to the road, with a small car park, so it all feels a bit cramped, I guess like most of Greater London, space is at a premium! However, get out on the course and you can completely lose yourself. First hole is a par 3 which is a bit odd, but this a super course and more hills than you imagine. Staff all very friendly too, whilst there is the impression of it being and old fashioned club, everyone we met was very friendly.

Purley Downs is a lovely course, played here at the end of April. The opening hole is a 161 yard, down into a valley par 3, with bunkers surrounding the green. The layout is good and have some stunning views over London, in fact my playing partner said on a clear day you can see the Wembley Arch. The course really plays as you see it. There are not too many blinds shot but you do have to think your way round. My only gripe was the greens, they were really quite poor, but will certainly return.

This is a lovely course with great open views. The greens are well kept with straight shots rewarded by not having to play from the rough. It has 3 very challenging holes of which a par 3 is a real test for 20+ handicappers. Well worth a visit and really good value with a friendly clubhouse to boot.

Purley Downs is a fantastic golf club. Whilst not too long, the course is both interesting and challenging......and there are some fantastic views, epecially from the 5th. Establish in 1894, it has a real established golf club look and feel
