i played moorend as i was on holiday and thought i would get a bit of practise and i wish i had never bothered it was terrible.boggy, fairways no different from rough, greens not much different from fairways and a guy on a tractor happily putting deep tyre tracks all the way up every fairway.as a senior i paid 9 pounds for 9 holes and i have never felt so ripped off.my advice to anyone thinking of playing this course is DONT...
A 9-hole hackers paradise. Not a good course, in my opinion. Some would say that it's great for beginners. When it's been cut, I would agree. But unfortunately it gets left far too long between cuts and if you go on the wrong day the fairways are like rough!
I played this course in summer 2010, I'm not a great golfer but I found this course really challenging. I had played on some of the academy style courses in the past and this was a real step up - I felt like I was playing a real round of golf for the first time! I was on my own and after the first hole I got chatting with a guy that caught me up quite quickly!!! We ended up playing the course together. I was really impressed, and the other guy said he had played a lot of the pay and play style courses in the area, and this was the best value for money by far. The greens were in good condition and the bunkers were nicely groomed, and the new club house is splendid. Next time I'm back up in stockport on business this will be one of my first stops.
For what it is Moorend is not a bad course at all. Not that long overall but there are couple of challneging par 5's - a 565 yarder with a tight fairway and a 500 yarder with a mean dogleg to it. Other than that it has a number of shortish par 4's with nice wide fairways and a few straighforward par 3's. Not many bunkers or hazards despite the occasional water feature. The surroundings of the course are actually quite pleasant and the fairways and greens reasonably well kept. Facilities wise there isnt much to speak of except for the small portakabin office/shop. The driving range seems to have had money invested in it lately. All in all not the most challenging of courses but worth a go if you happen to be passing.
In my opinion this is not the greatest course to play if you play regularly. There are bunkers placed extremely close to some of the tees which are unlikely to challenge the serious golfer! However, for total novices it has few restrictions which is what you need to get started.
£7 for 9 holes makes it extremely poor value for money. Enough said? You'd learn more playing on the M6.
We have played here quite a few times due to it being close to work. It is OK as an alternative to the range but I would not go out of your way to play it. There are few hazards and the greens are the worst I have ever played, often causing you to pick up your ball rather than attempt to put. OK as an introduction to a complete novice, but there are much better value for money courses elsewhere in the area.
