A very impressive design on some of the worst ground in Yorkshire. What is about golf clubs that they build on Wike Ridge - a very damp, poorly draining piece of land. The ground was uneven and still muddy after many dry days. Some greens not very good. But the course is very undulating (and tiring if you come from flat York!) and feels like you are in the US with deft touches such as tricky second shots into greens, plateau landing areas, and up and back fairways. But with reduced rates from Teetimes, the value was excellent, the challenge a real treat, and a beautiful vista. Holes on Lakes course worth mentioning - the shortish par 5 14th, the blind second shot to the par 4 12th, and the uphill gorse bound 6th.
Sprawling, impressive course. Sloping fairways and undulating greens combine to make this quite a challenge. Best holes? Probably the 1st and 10th, very similar demanding par 4's, with honourable mentions to the long par 5 8th and the dogleg 16th. Your stamina will be tested here it's a long way round but worth it. One gripe would be that a couple of short par 4's (the 6th in particular, blind tee shot, blind approach!) are poorly designed and getting close to Mickey Mouse golf. Expansive, and indeed expensive. 8/10
