12 reviews of Malden Golf Club

I played here in a fairly large society group on a sweltering Wednesday in September.

The course was in great condition with the greens very true although not too fast.

The course is nice and flat and therefore a good walking course, there were no real stand out holes either exceptionally good or bad.

We found everyone we encountered very friendly indeed, staff members etc.

The food was excelent which was served in a very impressive dining room. I would not hesitate to return.

We played the course as visitors on a weekday. Unfortunately it has rained hard all day so it was difficult to judge the condition of the course (puddles everywhere, each hole was full to the brim of water, bunkers were unplayable). As for the layout, there were some challenginh holes with variety in the design. Due to the weather conditions, some of the par 4s played very long and the treelined fairways punished wayward shots - buy a course planner if you have not played before. The professional was very welcoming, the members on the course were very slow and we waited on the 10th tee while group in front were still drinking tea at the halfway house - they gave us an evil look and said we 'might as well play through'.

I'd like to play again in decent conditions, it seemed to be a nice course without being spectacular.

It's been 8 years since I posted my not too flattering report and I'm pleased to see that there are positive reports from other visiting golfers since then. I will now pay a return visit to New Malden to experience the warmer welcome for myself(maybe in cognito,Ha Ha)I will not be able to do this until next year due to injury, but I will post my findings after.

Just to say that I fundamentally disagree with the negative report from John Felipe. Having visited and played at the club today I can only say that it would have been hard to have had a warmer reception from the Pro through to some members before we teed off and then the bar staff in the evening. The course was in good condition and it was an interesting an enjoyable round of golf, involving a bit of thinking to negotiate the various hazards including water on several holes. Thank you for a good day and I will be visiting again.

I heard once or twice about the impoliteness of some members of Malden Golf Club, so I felt a little bit uncomfortable when I heard I was to play this course as a visitor. I hoped my qualms would prove groundless, but sadly, I have to say that was not the case. We, three couples, played as two threeballs today, and spend 4 hours and fifteen minutes to complete the play. That is not a fast play, but, considering we let three twoballs behind us through, it is not a slow play either, as one twoball, after being let through, could not find their balls and thus held our play up for some time. I admit that twoball can be stalled behind threeball however fast threeball play. That is why we let twoballs behind us through whenever we felt the plays were being held up. Most of the members were friendly and polite when we let them through, but unfortunately, the behaviour of third twoball we let through was impolite, and that is an understatement. While we waited for the teeshot on the eighth tee, these two ladies came up to us and demanded, rather abruptly, to be let through even before they holed the previous hole out and went on to rebuke and offend our companions playing before us who were letting any team behind through whenever the opportunity arose, for not letting them through. My handicap is 12 and the handicap of two other members in our threeball is 9, so I think we are very seasoned players who are quite capable of speeding up the play of our companions before us, our wives. I understand that players can be cross whenever they feel the play is being held up and I am not a saint either, but I believe there are many polite ways to solve the situation. However, throwing tantrum and behaving rudely is definitely not one of them. After hearing from our wives how they were rudely treated by these two ladies after the ninth hole, my game collapsed. I want to believe almost all the members and staffs of Malden Golf Club are friendly and honourable, so it is really heartrending that very small minority of the members can let the whole club down.

Not a bad course at all. Not the most challenging but good value and a nice clubhouse. Members were friendly. No real "wow" holes but a perfectly pleasant day

Just to say that we had a society day at New Malden and everyone was friendly (including members) and the staff were very helpful. Sad to hear about the bad experience - some members can be a pain in the butt but we were very happy with New Malden. Liked the course too although personally I'd have all the trees chopped down and the bunkers filled in!

Three of my Dutch guests and myself had a very enjoyable day on the Malden Golf Club in late August 2003. We received a warm and pleasant welcome from the people in the pro shop. The basic need-to-knows were explained, varying from locker room codes, dressing code in the club house and some specifics on the course. The course itself was very good: nice steady not too fast greens, fairways and rough well kept, but a bit dry (remember we had a little heat wave at the time!) and in general a fair course. Also the service we received after the round of golf on the terrace was very friendly and pleasant. In our opinion this is NOT a golf club with an old fashioned mentality, in contrary to what Mr Felipe states in his report submitted on this website. Play at Malden to experience it yourself. We had a very pleasant day at Malden GC.

My name is Robert Hunter, I am the professional at Malden Golf Club, I remember the day so described by Mr Filipe on the web site, I will not go into the reasons why Mr Fillipe did not apparently enjoy his day.
Malden golf club has a well deserved reputation for its warm and friendly welcome, unfortunatly this web site gives the opposite impression. One written complaint carries more weight than a thousand verbal plaudits, and whilst we are sorry that Mr Fillipe and his friends will never visit us again, we do beleive that his comments should either be removed after so many months or at the least this answer should be available.
many thanks
Robert Hunter.

Turned up in a group of eight at approximately 9.00 am mid December. Enquired about having a coffee before we started our round and was informed that was not possible, quite rudely I may add, even though there was a group of members around a table with tea and coffee. We immediately got the impression we were not wanted at the club and in hindsight should heave left there and then. We paid our green fees and proceeded to the first tee where we wre informed we should wait as a group of members were going out before us. We were then kept waiting for between 10 and 15 minutes while this group of members poodled about from the pro shop to the tee, in no obvious hurry. The course itself is quite nice and in very good condition for this time of year. It would benefit if there were yellow or red stakes positioned around the many streams meandering through the course, as there were quite a few balls lost by our group who had no idea there were water hazards on certain holes.( no course guide available) All in all, our group found this club to be the most unpleasant we have encountered in the last 10 years of playing golf. We are all competent golferts, handicaps ranging from 8 to 24, so we are not new to the game. We each paid £15.00 to play this course using 2 fore 1 vouchers, but because of the rude attitude of the members, staff and greenstaff not one of our group will ever play here again. Enjoy your old fashioned golf club mentality Malden, but remember when you are struggling to attract people to your course, politeness would'nt go amiss.

MALDEN IS NOT A LONG OR HARD COURSE BUT HAS TO BE TREATED WITH A BIT OF RESPECT TREE LINED FAIRWAYS DEEPISH ROUGH WELL PLACED BUNKERS IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH THE BEVERLEY BROOK WANDERS AROUND THE COURSE WAITING TO CATCH ANOTHER UNSUSPECTING GOLF BALL /THIS COURSE CAN STILL BE ENJOYED BY ALL STANDARDS OF GOLFER (HIGHER HANDICAPPERS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF BALLS)
