Played Sunday 7th March 2010. A warm and friendly welcome before we even set foot in the clubhouse. Had a great Golfers Breakfast before heading out on the course. Steward advise that the greens had been penci-tyned so were a little bobbly but quick. Also advised us to stay off the race track. The fences form integral part of the course and has there had been a race meeting on the previous Thursday the ground had been cut up. He wasn't wrong. Its fun playing out of horseshoe impressions! The course was in great condition and dry which was great compared to our home parkland courses. A very enjoyable round as our fourball handicaps vary from 9 to 21 and it tested all of us. Great value on 2 fore 1 at £17.50 each on a weekend.
I have always presumed courses set within a horserace track must be at best a bit dull but having played this i have to put my hand up and say i was wrong. Its hard to put your finger on the style of the course its part reminescent of a links, part heathland and part parkland. The links feel comes from inviting ribbling fairways where you let rip with your driver only to find your ball gobbled up by a hidden bunker (yes i no its annoying but its also great fun. A couple of the par 3s in particular are pure heathland - and i have to say it is the par 3s which steal the show here. And then if you stray onto the racetrack you can find yourself hard up against a National Hunt Fence (and believe me they are bigger than they look on the tele!). The condition is excellent and the greens great and we we played it certainly was not crowded. Overall the course is a quirky treat with an established feel which some feels very old fashioned. But the club house and proshop are very welcoming. Well worth a trip.
Played Ludlow on 29/5/08 and the course was in excellent condition. Fairways were like carpets and the greens were also superb and quick without being stupidly so. A nice welcome in the clubhouse and pro shop aswell. One disappointment was the attitude of a club member in the group behind who semed to think that we were playing slow, and persisting in making sarcastic comments every time we passed. Well Mr Member, we can only go as quick as the group in front, and 4 hours 10 minutes for a 3 ball to do 18 holes isn't all that bad!! Apart from Mr Grumpy Member - an enjoyable day!
Capital turf - tight fairways and excellent greens make this imaginative course a joy to play. It's almost completely flat, but the layout is intriguing, with the racecourse never far away. Some clever dogleg holes make you think, and there are some memorable par threes, particularly the 13th (Lake) and the 14th (Punchbowl). Well worth a visit.
