1 review of Llantrisant and Pontyclun Golf Club

Visited L&P for the first time last week. Didn't look too promising when the shop was locked (the weather was pretty bad that day), but soon found the pro(?) who was very friendly and accommodating. He explained that the course was reduced to 15 holes due to the extensive rain over the previous 2 weeks, suggested that we make up for the loss of 3 holes by playing another 3 if we felt like it, offered the use of the club facilities if heavy rain occured again and then charged reduced green fees! So, a great first impression and is to be commended. Winter tees were in use, which were adequate, but are the one area that should be addressed for the future. Considering the weather, the course was in good condition, no doubt helped by teeing up from the fairway. The lower lying holes were 'damp' which was to be expected due to the bouts of heavy rain for the 2 weeks prior to playing the course. The greens were, perhaps suprisingly, in exceptional condition. There were the obligatory, unrepaired pitch marks left by previous players, but these were few and far between and quickly repaired. Being a high handicapper, I found the course a nice challenge. Several holes are blind whilst playing uphill, so a course planner (if one exists) would be a bonus the first time out. The hilly nature of the course ensures you get a good cardio vascular workout, especially the 18th! The holes are nicely varied, with a good mix of mid-length and short holes, and usually wide open so forgiving of less than accurate tee shots. If you're a big hitter, there's numerous opportunities to drive the green. The course isn't long at about 5200yds - I'm used to longer courses - with the only par 5, 2nd, being a short-ish 450yds. This doesn't detract though as the geography of the course more than makes up for it. Didn't get chance to use the club facilities as it was more important to try to beat the 5pm M4 mayhem, however the changing rooms were more than adequate. All in all, a great visit to a great course and one that will definately be repeated.
