I echo the comments of the last guy. we were charged £13 to play 9 holes. We played the first only and it was so bad we came in for a refund. At first they refused, saying we'd have to "write in". Eventually we kicked up a stink and got our refund. Don't bother.

Played this course maybe 3-4 times over the last couple of years, and always enjoyed it and scored better than expected. While it is reasonably featureless, it's quite open, and easy to score well (which let's be honest can be pretty fun). Also, it's never a problem to get a tee time and pace of play is pretty quick. Don't really remember it being too bad previously, certainly not bad enough to be put off playing it again from time to time. HOWEVER, yesterday we played a round, only to discover a highly dilapidated course! The grass on the tee boxes was so long I couldn't tee the ball up low enough to be able to use my 3 wood without getting grass before the ball - I found myself teeing up in divots to be able to make clean contact! I lost 3 BALLS IN THE FAIRWAY! Straight hits that weren't in any danger - saw them land, couldn't find them because the grass was so LONG. Also, long grass meant it was impossible to have any control playing approach shots from the fairway. In fact, the fairways were worse than the rough at most courses I've played. Anything that went near the actual rough were impossible to find. We decided on the second hole to award ourselves free drops out the hard wet sandless bunkers. The greens weren't terrible, but they weren't consistent, and they were pretty slow. I always enjoy going back to a course I've played a few times to try and beat my previous score (which remarkably I actually did on this round) and get an idea for how I'm improving - but this was not an enjoyable round at all. The staff were friendly enough, and the driving range is decent, but the clubhouse is scrappy and has no bar. Would really have to be desperate to come back here again.

Cant help but agree with previous review the course is featureless, boring (there is not one memorable hole)and noisy from the close proximity of the A12. I played in July 2011 and found the course in woefull condition the tees were uncut fairways bare and the greens were not a lot better that my back garden lawn. Avoiding the goose poo on one of the holes was impossible! The bunkers were an absolute disgrace yes there was some sand in them but the matting that lines them was poking through on most of the bunkers I saw. £24 is a lot of money to play this course I wont have to worry though as i wont be back There are far to many better courses in the Chelmsford area.

I have to say this course is currently top of the WORST LIST.. i honestlt cant think of anything good to say about it. lets start with the price £24!!!!!!! yep thats right £24 to play here on a weekday morning........ u have to play here to believe what bad value for money this is. THe whole course is featureless, the green only see a lawnmower probably once a month as the grass wass approx half an inch on all greens and if that was not bad enough at least three greens were infested with mushrooms sprouting out of them!!!!!!!! No yardage markers either and only 1 bunker from what i saw actually had any sand to speak of inside it.. The owners of this course should charge no more then £12 per round which despite the conditions would attract more golfers as the course is generally empty!! One last comment is the danger you will face on the first fairway which runs alongside the driving range, it was scattered with at laest 50 balls from the range which is not protected with any sort of fencing so wear a helmet if u dont want a golf ball on the back of your head!!!!!!!

As this is a pay to play golf course you need to keep a sense of realisim. 18 hole is a challenge but very featurless, wasnt really a hole to remember. Reasonable price for a round. Fairways and greens need a lot of work as they can be uncut and very weedy. Not exceptional course by any means but ok if you just want to turn up and hit a ball. The 9 hole is very simple no rough/dreadful greens (more like quite nice fairway!) ...limited sand in the bunkers. Seems they recently spent more money on the artificial rock garden putting thing than on the course....Good driving range. If you want to pay to play then its decent enough, but if you want a decent course with nice greens then consider a membership at a proper golf club.

V.Poor. The greens are in desperate need of some attention and at the very least you would expect them to be cut closer than your average clubs fairway, it was like putting on weather worn winter greens. There was a distinct lack of sand in the majority of bunkers, course was generally in a poor state of health for August and even one hole was lacking a flag. Front nine was a flat featureless chore and void of character, it was like playing on a football pitch.

Hylands is a great course to play when the weather is warm. It plays very long, but if you hit solid shots off the tee it is possible to shoot a good score. They have recently attempted to make the greens smaller and the rough thicker and this has made it more of a challenge. The 9 hole course is great for all beginners with a mixture of holes from 90 yards to over 400 yards. All in all a good course but could do with a better clubhouse.

Course is currently in reasonably good condition but greens are very slow. I never have trouble booking tee-off times and find that play is never too slow. Course can play very long in the wind but is a good test of golf.

hylands is a tough course for the begginer. if u have a long drive then it would make the course a lot much easier. dont play on a windy day though u lose a load of balls and it takes forever to get round

Wow !!!! What a great course....Dont play it on a windy day it takes forever to get round . And a trolley well recommended , Excellent facilities and very good 9 hole course on the right hand side as you drive in . Definately one for the summer where you will also get a great tan while you play

Should have read the feedback above we did indeed play the wrong green on the 1st hole adding another 40 yards to a par 5 into a strongish wind. the course is very open the rough is not thick as the previous comments say but it is not a bad course worth playing if you want a quick easy round the main gripe is all the holes are the same average par 4's with dog leg the eightenth is interesting with a drive between to lakes. Biggest problem is the clubhouse does not sell BEER biggest plus is although the course was closed they still let us play as we had booked a tee time before (I have played on worse that have been fully open) if you play of less than 18 and hit it long of the tee this corse will be very easy

Course is very open, not much deep rough, scored my best round here for a few years and would recommend it to all beginners. The course plays very long in the wind and the par 5 1st is very difficult to see where you are supposed to be going first time you play it. Fair bit of water about but very enjoyable round of golf.
