Honiton Golf Club

A friendly and unpretentious club with a very pleasant and well-maintained course split into 3 sections (1-7, 8-10 and 11-18) by country roads. NB Rounds may start at the 11th, depending on the time of day and size of group. The course is elevated, with particularly good view from the 9th fairway, but not hilly.
It starts off fairly straightforward, but make the most of the 2nd because it's the last short par 3 - of the other 4, the shortest is about 180 yards and the rest all over 200. The pick of them is the 4th, with a row of trees blocking your way to the green with any club long enough to get you there. Lay up and be happy with your 4.
Apart from the opening tee shot (left-handers with a fade may taste tarmac), the most interesting Par 4s are probably on the back 9 - the 11th demands a precise drive, but not as much so as the 13th where you need to be virtually on the line of the marker post and past it to be able to see the green in 2 through a narrow gap. This test of your accuracy is followed by the shorter of the par 5s, then 4 consecutive par 4s: three where you can throw away a promising start, then a nice closer where the main pressure comes from your fellow competitors watching from the clubhouse balcony.
A thoroughly enjoyable course to play, with enough interest for players of any handicap and usually excellent greens.
