I played Hindley Hall on a surprisingly sunny afternoon and, considering the amount of rain we've experienced recently, the course was in remarkably good condition with the tee beds, fairways and fringes well grassed and firm. The large greens held approaches very well and, although they were consistently well paced and putts ran true, I found them quite difficult to read at times - a real challenge. The parkland course is a little gem, rewarding thoughtful golf and good shotmaking with plenty of well maintained fairway and greenside bunkers to make you think about where to put the ball next. Big hitters could find themselves in trouble on a number of holes with tree-lined fairways to keep you honest and penal rough round the fringes of the course. 3-woods and 4-irons off the tee for position weren't a rare sight. Five fair par 3s can help keep your score on track and it's a lovely looking, fairly easy walking course that feels quite intimate as you make your way round. My favourite hole, the 8th, is a short par 4 over a small valley, requiring a solid drive followed by a short pitch. A good drive back over the valley on 9 gives you another straightforward short iron into another good green. I'd recommend asking for (or downloading) a course map if you're new to the course as there's no strokesaver and only 150yd markers on the course. I played on a free invite so have rated the VFM based on their advertised £28 weekday visitors' rate, although I'd be surprised if there weren't some deals out there. Excellent clubhouse facilities, food and beer with very courteous members made it a day to remember and I wholeheartedly recommend the course to anyone in the local area.
