A beautiful little golf club in decline. Whilst the club can boast a challenging 9 hole experience a visit for the day finds yourself paying into an honesty box to play, an empty shop and a bar only open for a couple of hours a day, all in all you can play for free and go home contented that you have played one of the best courses in the area but with no facilities.
Hopefully the club will find itself in the ascendancy as opposed to the apparent decline but for the golfer currently looking for a knock around just turn up and play, its free if your dishonest enough, you wont be checked.
Cracking little course with lots of character. Played on a glorious Friday afternoon and the course was very well presented. The greens were excellent, much better than I was expecting. I particularly liked the par 3 8/17th double green. Definitely a bargain for the price. Well worth a visit. Only downside is there not being 18 greens
Interesting to see negative comments re members attitude. I live in York and have played Heworth prob about adozen times in last ten years. Had same experience(s) as reported including a "member" sending (to far end of the course)the assitant pro to tell my playing partner to tuck his shirt in. The shirt in question was tucked in except for about 4 inches at the back. Still you dont want the world to fly of its axis and total chaos to reign!!!!!!
I played Heworth in June and the course was in great condition. The rough was very tough,I think because of frequent rain but the green staff worked hard to keep it reasonable. The greens were excellent and true. I enjoyed the course very much despite having to play some of the holes a second time.
A nicely kept course but it became a little tedious on the back nine since there are only 11 different fairways and most of the shared holes had very little difference, except for a few extra yards, perhaps. The price for a round was £16 on a Thursday for me, and there is no half-round option. There were a few interesting holes. The par-3 second sticks in my mind, with hedges blocking most of the direct path - although only 4 or 5 feet high, they seemed imposing. All in all, not a bad round although a little more imagination in the tee placings may have made the back 9 a little more exciting.
