3 reviews of Harrogate Golf Club Ltd

Played Friday 20th Feb 2009 under the winter special offer from the club website. Paid £29.50 for Coffee and bacon sandwiches on arrival, 18 holes of golf followed by a meal of Fish and chips(V Large)and treacle sponge and ice cream and more coffee. EXCELLENT VALUE. The Course played well for the time of year and sensible management provided an extra hole to account for the closed hole. The Green ran very true and were reasonably quick for Feb, considering the course had only been open for 3 days following the recent snow. All in all we were extremely well recieved by very welcoming staff and will surely return because of this.

Played early May - £40 for a day ticket - excellent value since I did two rounds and could have done more if I was fitter. Course isn't to challenging, but tests most club golfers more than enough. Course all links together, with a good mix of holes over a fairly flat course. Back holes more tricky since you play into the wind on some long par 4s. Course generally in good condition given the amount of rain recently. Drainage excellent. Club house very much Harrogate style, but a high quality members club with nice changing rooms and plenty of space. Practise facilities limited to a putting green and a large field. Friendly pro shop - adequate stocks of most things. Played first round with members - very friendly and happy to assist. All in a bargain day made even better by the excellent weather

This course is probably much better than my first impression. I played the course during a very dry spell but in an almost gale force wind, and in these conditions I found the course almost unplayable. The greens were far too hard, even well struck wedge shots from tight fairway lies were shooting 20 yards through the green. Three of the last four holes were a real struggle, straight uphill and upwind at 400 yards plus were almost unreachable in two and a wee bit tiresome to play. There are however many good points about HGC, after a bland opening hole there are some crackers on this mature parkland track. The par 3’s are good and demanding as are the par 5’s and there are a couple of excellent long par 4’s. The condition of the fairways and greens was quite good, but could be improved. The thing that really impressed me about the course was the positioning of the numerous fairway bunkers, the best I have seen for a long time. One other matter I must mention is the locker room, it is by far and away the best I have ever seen at a golf course, opulence does not do it justice, the only thing that dragged me out of the shower was the thought of once again walking on the heated tiles on the bathroom floor. Trust me, its worth every penny of the green fee just to get a shave and shower here. – Course 7.5/10 – Showers 12/10!
