I used to play this a lot during the school holidays maybe 10 years ago.
It is a moorland course and very challenging. Anything that doesn't find the fairway is potentially a lost ball given the growth of gorse and heather all round the course.
There are also burns featuring on about half the holes.
I played it again recently and had a decent day (still lost a few balls though). It looks to be in much better condition and seems to be a lot more pro-active work being done (trees planted etc).
However there are still a lot of 'nightmare' areas.
Agree with those who've said local knowledge is cruical. Probably worth taking an iron off many tees to make sure you keep your ball in play.
Would not like to play a medal round here! Far to much danger, but it's decent value if you are in the area I suppose.
I read the positive remarks about this course and paid it a visit. What an expensive mistake. After loosing a dozen golf balls, I gave up on the 14th and headed for home, determined to never play this course again. This view may change though...... This course is all about ballcontrol and precission. My game is not. That's explain my loss off balls and strong frustration. This is currently not my cup off tea at the moment. Being a local with a desire to play golf for the next 40 years; this view may change though. But for a high handicapper with no ball control, this is not the course to waste money and golfballs on.
The staff was very friendly though and the views over Clyde was to die for. It was therefore not a waste of my time.
My name is Allan Hendry and i am current club champion and match secretary. I have been a member of Whinhill for a number of years and can say nothing rivals it in the West of Scotland. The greens and bunkers are immaculate, i must say the greenstaff put in agreat deal of work especialy on the 3rd and 17th greens
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome any guests and potential members. I am always about for a chat, if not ask for the club mistress my partner Kirsteen for info.
Before moving here to San Diego in 1996 I was a regular visitor to the course playing at least once a week.
The wind and the rain are killers, but the views over the river clyde on a good day are really "Kodak" moments. When I come back to visit family I always make a point of playing a round or two.
I live in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire but have joined Whinhill because I work in Greenock. The course itself has a good layout and because of the location the wind usually blows you off your feet. The course can be quite demanding and local knowledge is a big advantage.I would say you certainly get value for money at Whinhill
Iplay this course at least twice weekly and it is a real challenge the rough hasn't grown much this year so shots off the fairway tend to run fairly far ,also if your unemployed or retired you can get a lesure pass from council and a round is only 70pence BARGAIN OR WHAT
I am a current member of Greenock Whinhill Golf club and originally played the course 10 years ago when I had to find something else to do on a Saturday afternoon when I stopped playing football. Whinhill is renowned locally for being a course where you need tohave a canny knowledge of the chip & run game rather than a bighitter. The greens are small and the fairways are narrow with manyburns criss crossing the course. The course is set in a horseshoe shape surrounding the local Beith Dam and has natural drainage which has proved invaluableduring the winter when rain falls almost daily ! In the summer thescenery is tremendous with views over the River Clyde. The Golf Club is privately owned with a membership of 300+but all visitors are made welcome at any time. I played the whinnie while stationed at Holy Loch sub base and still play when I visit my wifes family. It is a real workout, very challenging. I play with Allan Johnston, Frank McCllellan, and John Hegarty
I would like to congratulate Chris Logue on him winning the Junior convenors prize with a net score of 64. The course fairways and greens need work but all in all it is a good course to play and learn on. Peter Thomson of Port Glasgow Golf Club.
My name is Eddie Small and I lived near the foot of the Auchmountain Boys Glen in Aberfoyle Road. As a small boy I used to watch lambs being born on the Whinhill Golf Course. I used to fish golf balls out of Beath's Dam for angry red-faced golfers. As a young teenager I delivered messages for the Co-op by bicycle to the people who looked after the club house. I migrated to Perth, Western Australia in February 1953. Happy days of yesteryear! My email address is jock@highway1.com.au
I play the Winnie every time I come to visit my relatives in Greenock. I am a real duffer, but enjoy walking the course because of the scenery. We will be visiting for hogmanay and might even try to get in a game or two. I play with Alex McEwan. e-mail: gollogly@erols.com Jim Gollogly 17820 Hazelcrest Drive Gaithersburg, MD 20877 301 330 6193
