5 reviews of Formby Golf Club

The previous reviewer has this course spot on. Not cheap to play (day rate is £95) and NOT for the high handicapper. reasonably tight fairways and some testing 400 yard or so par 4s. A beautiful surrounding of woodland made the course seem even better and we played on a wind free day things made things very slightly easier although playing this course for the first time even with a course planner didnt make things much easier with all the undulations of the links. Would probably need to play it 3-4 times to get a proper feel of it and having played other top courses just the once (Turnberry and Royal Liverpool to name but two) one would be a lot more confident going round those two courses a second time as opposed to going round Formby again. In all honesty a course too difficult for my 20 handicap status

Although it is certainly not cheap to visit Formby for the weekend it is well, well worth the money. The Southport area is well known for its famous golfing names like Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham & St Annes and Royal Birkdale. I have been fortunate enough to play all three of these courses and Formby is every bit as good which says a hell of a lot!

The woodland that surrounds the golf course is the perfect backdrop to the links style layout and gives the course an extra dimension that other links courses fail to match.

The par 3s are the main challenge and if you manage to score well there you should be on the way to a decent score. Be warned though; this would be a very tough test for the higher handicappers, especially if the wind gets up. We played 2 rounds; one in the wind and one with just a gentle breeze and either way you need to know what your doing to really appreciate this gem of a course.

In my opnion this course is just another reason to visit the Southport area for a weekend golf break or a golf tour that takes you to the famous names I previously mentioned.

Top, top class. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Tough but beautiful. This course is fantastic. Its hard to place this gem as it is neither links or parkland. One thing for sure though, it is a must play if you are in the area. Deep rough and bunkers together with quick undulating greens make this a great test. If you're off line from the tee, chances are you wont see your ball again. Keep it on the short stuff and the course is very fair and will reward good shots. Front 9 has a wooded feel , a bit like the dutchess at woburn in places. Back 9 is a lot more links style. Brilliant fun and a fantastic day out. Course record of 67 seems achievable when you look at the course. Trust me it really isn't !

Wow!!How this course can not be on the Open Rota I do not know. This course has it all. A beautiful links, with beautiful fairways and greens and a touch of forest as well.
I have played Birkdale and this course is DEFINATELY a match for it!!

What a hidden treat! This is a golf course that is as much fun as any in the UK. It has some characteristics of a links course, yet several hills are in parkland hills. On back 9, you get a fabulous view of the ocean. Played there on a Saturday night, right after attending the Open at Lytham. My wife (found out after we were done that women are not allowed on this course...they have a separate one for females) and I played on it and never saw another golfer. Great creaky old clubhouse. Play it!
