When our local course was closed for the day, myself and a friend took ourselves off to crimple for what we thought was going to be a cheap friendly laugh of a game. However when we got there the prices were much steeper when i used to come to the course as a junior. still we paid our money, and before we could take the "course" we were tackled by the "pro" about a callaway war bird 3 wood which unfortunately was fake. This was obvious as the original hosel on a genuine war bird is hardly visable. on this club it had some garish black "knobbly" hosel on it and some bandito shaft on it. Even so we were quoted 90 quid after he "kindly" cut the price from 180 quid for a 15 year old club!!! this gave us something to laugh at during our round. By the way, this wasn't the kind older funny gentleman that seems to have been at the club forever, this was some other guy.
Del Boy Pro rant over, to the course. We had a choice of two tees on the first tee, white (comp tee presumably) or logs!! we thought we'd better stick with logs. This proved to be a wise move as the white tee's on the 1st were the only ones on the course. going down the fairway, things hadn't changed much from 10 years ago. Simple straight massive fairway, which was reasonably well cut. However when we got to the green we were shocked to find they were more "brown" than green. Moss hadn't been treated and it had eaten away at the greens, also some of the greens had mole hills and holes in them that had been filled with sand. The surrounding bunkers were so poorly looked after, that if we found them we refused to play out of them as they were full of stones. The overall condition of the course was extremely dissapointing as the course was reasonably well kept 10 years ago and you felt that you got what you paid for. However the prices have risen and the course is unplayable. If the greens and bunkers were pristine, then the £13 for 18 holes may be just about reasonable. My advice if you've just started to play the game, just save your money and hit a ball around on the stray. You get the same standard of grass, plus you don't get someone trying to rip you off with 15year old fakes!
Challenge? well nope not really, i am working towards a single figure handicap at my club and i played to level par through 18 holes so no challenge at all.
The one plus for the course comes in the shape of the clubhouse, which is a nice quaint pub.
If the owners are reading this, take my advice either drop your prices or sort the course out. Either way concentrate on funcions in the clubhouse, this should be your main source of revenue.
I was suprised when looking at previous reports to see some going back to 2000 - I had presumed playing the course that it was only one or to years old because little seems to of been done to it since it was converted from farmland. No trees have been palnted (although there are one or two orgianal quite old trees and some hegderows) and there is hardly any diffinaition between fairway or rough. The greens look awful, but actually did not put that badly.
But what really annoyed me about the course is that this is not the worst piece of land in the world and a decent designer could have made a far better layout. It was so obvious that greens were in the wrong place, holes could have been made longer and at very little cost a decent course produced. Also there are some good views but i just spent my time thinking how much the course could be improved. WHy land owners think they can design their own course when course designers can maximise the use of the existing land is beyond me.
I do have to say Spoffoth which is only 3 or 4 miles away is an example of a far better designed pay and play in this area.
Very nice club house serving good food nice atmosphere the cousre is great if you are just starting the greens are getting alot better I thought that it was very good for the price it's a very nice little course I shall be visting again you should to
Absolutely atrocious. A waste of money. The greens are appallingly bad - brown and very badly maintained. The tees are just as bad. £9 for nine holes is a complete waste of money. I used to play this course 30 years ago when it was reasonable; now it is a joke. Go to Temple Newsam in Leeds in the afternoon and play 18 holes of real golf for about the same cost.
Played Crimple Valley today. One to avoid. Fairways poor, greens worse - if you can call them greens. No Grass and full of moss.
£15 for 18 holes is a laugh and better value is available nearby.
Played the course on a hot and sunny day only to be greated by three players without shirts and wearing cut-off jeans, Im not a stickler for the dress code but there are limits!!! The greens were poor, the fairways even worse, all the holes are straight and the stroke index one hole is the first, very odd! Very un-impressed with the entire set up Im afraid. Needless to say, I won't be re-visiting.
Green are in good condition considering the course is always open despite the weather, although it can get very boggy around 1st green and just off 2nd tee.
Very nice clubhouse serving good food.
