Played Cabopino as part of a week long golf trip March 09, and it's probably fair to say it was the lowest rated of the 5 we played. At just under 5700 yards, this is not the longest of courses, but it is extremely tight in places and is spread out over a large area, making it a difficult walking course - despite my dislike of them, I think a buggy here is probably wise. The general feeling was that you'd need to play it half a dozen times or so to play it anything like, and as such it didn't really make for what we'd call good holiday golf. Fairways were in decent condition, bunkers were ok but not great, tee beds in reasonably good condition for time of year. The course has a real bomb alley feel about it from holes 8 through 12, the latter of these holes a real odd affair as you could see everyone around you not having a clue where they were going. In fairness, holes 13 through 18 are decent holes, but again with water lurking on blind shots it leaves the first time player very frustrated. The greens really frustrated. They were rock hard, they didin't feel like they'd had water on them (or insufficient) at all in the previous couple of days and as such were unreceptive, with balls pitching the front of greens and simply running all the way across the greens and off the back. You couldn't play links style golf to compensate as bunkers are a feature at the front of just about every green, leaving you no option but to fly all the way to the green. That said, once on them, they did run true and were evenly paced. In a group of 12 with handicaps ranging from low single figures to 20, the scores reflected the difficult playing conditions the greens in particular created, as 23 points was the best score of the day off full handicap, 18 the worst. In other words, it was tough for everyone. Without doubt the third is the signature hole - you get to the elevated tee and simply can't believe the green in front of you is the one you're playing to. It is quite a hole, one well worth playing. Clubhouse and facilities were ok with staff friendly enough. When you visit this course, be prepared to leave the driver in the bag for the bulk of the round - and get a buggy!
