10 reviews of Bulwell Forest Golf Club
I played here 03/06/2011. Being a long way from my native Norfolk on a few days visit I was impressed with the welcome in the Pro-Shop and the help given. Furthermore, in the clubhouse, a frienly chat with the present Lady Captain about the course was again very welcome. On arriving at the first tee I met Tony, Tom and Tim (seniors) who invited me to join them and showed me round the course. I thoroughly enjoyed my day, their company and the course. At £10 it was good value for money and I will play here again on another of my frequent visits to relatives in the area.
My second visit to Bulwell Forest. A short course, quite hilly which has benefited from improvements over the last 2 years between my two games.
Today found the clubhouse very old fashioned, reeking of fried food and very tatty. Pro shop very small but fine. Tees good, paths between holes fine but could be tidier and almost all greens extremely good. Some issues about moving between holes, 17th and 18th is a test of geography and the corner two holes (7 & 8?) can make for a long wait as they share the same fairway.
So overall well worth playing, except for the fact that for the last month at least, Bulwell has advertised a midweek rate of £10, but charged us today £15 with a 2 fore 1 voucher. Phoned up afterwards when I realised and politely asked why. Young man on phone, same as who served us this morning in the shop, said that £10 was a promotion (does not state this is temporary anywhere on the huge banners dotting the course or in the clubhouse or shop) and that £15 was the 'normal' green fee. When I pointed out that by the time we had bought a voucher we had only saved 75p each, got very shirty, told me I could argue (I wasn't arguing) with the club secretary but he would say the same, that 2 fore 1 vouchers were the death of golf and that is why clubs were closing. Implied we were wrong to expect golf for £5 per person and generally was dismissive, arrogant and had little time for reason.
I told him I would be posting this review, which I have tried to keep balanced, did not seem the least bit bothered and I feel Bulwells way on interpreting the voucher scheme dubious. He told me the promotion with midweek at £10 would be running for at least another couple of months so clearly £10 is the current price. If you run a 'promotion' through your busiest time of year it seems fair to see it as a the standard price.
So i suggest that before you part with your money, you consider that for the £15 plus voucher, you will be getting a discount in pence, and believe me, there are far more salubrious places to play midweek, especially when you want to relax afterwards somewhere rather better than a dated pub interior from the 1970's
An enjoyable round of golf on a nice little course. Think the top mark would have to go to the greens, all in good condition.
Big dislike was the two holes that shared the same fairway, not keen at firing golf balls at people walking up fairway. Think that some warning signs need putting up on this hole, with guidence into order of play.
Would I play here again? Yes I would, but would make sure insuarnce was up to date.
I have played this course a few times now and have never failed to enjoy it. A very nice mix of long and short holes. ALways in good condition and the course is playable in winter too.
recently a pga pro called barry hurt took over from roy truman and has changed the course with new pots being made well stocked pro shop and with a new chef the course has took aturn for the good and the juniors are great love the club!!!
though only a par 68 the course was always a challenge. the quality of the greens was excellent. the elevated tees and greens with gulleys - gorse and bushes inbetween made you concentrate at all times.complements to the staff. definately worth a return visit.
I have played this course twice and, although I am a high handicapper, I managed to score reasonably well on it. I found the course both challenging and well kept.
However, my father, his friend and I turned up for a round yesterday afternoon for which we had a tee time booked for and we were greeted in the pro shop by the rudest man I have ever come across in my five years of playing this game. Basically the comment was along the lines of I don't care if you have a tee time booked, I didn't book it, there's a competition on and you ain't playing! Fair enough if there is a competition on and there had been a mistake but that doesn't give a reason for the way we were spoken to.
I certainly will not be returning to this golf course.
Bulwell Forest Golf CLub has now been traken over by Roy Truman, the new club professional. It is no longer looked after by Nottingham City Council as it has turned private. They have got new greengreepers in, and now the course is in better shape than ever before. It has some very tricky holes, but they just build up to the quality of the course. Very cheap Pro Shop as well as value for money round of golf. Well worth a play!
For the price you pay on this course, it could be better maintained. That aside, the course is quite challenging because of the vast variety of holes. Your tee shots really have to be accurate. There are many hills, short and long holes. It is spoiled at times though by the fact that many fairways are so close together that you end up getting in the way of other holes. This can be a nuisance at times. However, it is quite challenging as a course goes, and worth a visit.
Need to know if your tee shots are accurate?.....If so try this challenging course because if they aren't you will be in the mire.
