Essex is not normally the place to find hilly courses - but Boyce Hill is the exception. There are some stunning views across the Thames Estuary towards Kent and that will be some consolation if you find the tight fairways and tricky greens are causing some damage to your card. It's a course where the thinking golfer can succeed over the long hitter. Reading the greens is not easy but it's a real challenge and the service and food in the clubhouse is also top quality. Ask for speciality of the house - lambs shank! David Williams

This course is absolutely brilliant. The cadets are very polite and well dressed. It was nice to see girls playing at the course. The clubhouse does the nicest BLT'S and chips.

As the name implies, this is a hilly course, with many of the greens having tricky borrows. It is a very pretty course, especially in late spring, when the many trees and flowers are in bloom. The clubhouse opens on to a large patio that overlooks the 18th green. The Standard Scratch is generally considered to be very tight, which belies the relatively short overall length. NB: The total length of the course is soon to be increased to 6000yds plus.
