Played on 31 August 2010, and have to add to my playing partners comments as previous. I too am dismayed that in this day and age courses dont allow you to book a tee time! It can only be for fear of someone not turning up when another 4 ball could of had the slot I guess but when your travelling 70 mile its a big gamble to get there and hope to get on. Indeed the 1st hole is nice and the 17th in my opinion the best hole on the course, maybe not from the tee but your second shot and looking back from the back of the green especcially as we had sun setting was quite majestic, this hole should be the 18th what a travesty to waste as hole 17. Again I was told by many it was a brill course very picturesque but was left a tad disappointed. Saying that it aint the worst course in the area, Richmond and Woodham probably shave this course in this area and cheaper, greens were indeed immaculate some of the best this year i have seen. Rating off course based on pro shop and changing, never visited bar as off course late.
played barnard on the afternoon of the 31st august 2010 straight after finishing at wilton golf course.
upon arrival we checked in with the pro and she told us as it was ladies day they had priority on every tee on the course. this was a new concept to me but we made our way to the 1st tee which is a par 4 with a small stream at the front of the green.
as it was my first time playing the course i took out driver and hit what i thought was a good shot straight down the middle of the fairway and watched the ball bounce a few times before it disappeared out of sight. my playing partners and i walked up to find my ball had vanished (presumably into the stream as it was no where to be seen in the fairway or light rough at the bottom of the bank). if you are new to the course my recommendation would be hit a mid iron off the tee at the first!!
the course then winds it way up and around away from the clubhouse with some quaint par 3s and one very long par 5.
there wasnt any real stand out holes for me apart from the 1st and 17th, which is a very nice par 4 with the stream running all the way through the hole, and i have to say the greens were in immaculate condition and a pleasure to putt on. some of the holes just seemed like they had been dropped in as a second thought and certain parts of the course were very up and down, up and down.
i have to be honest and say the course left me feeling like it could have been so much better. after wanting to play it for a long time now i have to say i would never make an effort to go back and cant understand why so many people rave about it. woodham golf course is a far superior track in my opinion and half the price too.
i was left feeling very disappointed overall at barnard castle and i dont think i would return.
Played the course for the first ime in 20 plus years recently. Several changes but still challenging. The stream that runs through the course comes into play seemingly on every hole. Course was in good condition in delightful countryside and well worth a visit.
Clubhouse hospitality was excellent with all staff looking after us very well.
