Played Ashton mid July in constant rain throughout our entire round. This is not an overly long course, with a par of 70 at just over 6200 yards off white tees. It is well laid out, with some very interesting and quite challenging holes mixed in with some good risk reward opportunities. None of the par 5s are particularly long, and I'd say they are all reachable in 2 on a day of decent ground conditions. There are 4 par 3s on the back 9 and only one on the front, making it a split of 37 out, 33 in, which I found quite unusual - but it doesn't detract from a good round of golf. Despite the incesent rain, the fairways held up reasonably well, with only a couple retaining standing water - the 15th being the notable exception. In fairness though I suspect most other courses would have been closed in those conditions. The greens were true and again held little water, with a couple of exceptions. They were a little slow for obvious reasons, but on the whole were well kept and fair. What bunkers were in play appeared to be consistent in the amount of sand in them. Tee beds were neat and well kept. Plenty of trees abound so go off line and expect to shoot a high score. That said, most fairways are plentiful in width and give a fair opportunity for players of all ability to play to their handicaps. If I was to pick a signature hole out, I'd assume it to be the last - a good par 3 to finish. But there are 4 or 5 other really good looking holes in addition that stick in the mind. Locker rooms and pro shop were more than adequate, and a nice club house with all facilities you'd expect was at our disposal. Staff and members were very friendly towards us. My only criticism would be on the catering side, which I'd describe as basic at best - in fact, the evening meal was distinctly poor. If you're going for golf alone though, I'd highly recommend this course and I will endeavour to return to play it in the future in better weather!

I think that this is an excellent course. Both the pro shop and club house have to be the best in the area. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel very welcome, Colin the club Pro and his assistant James are both highly qualified people who have an obvious passion for golf, the shop has to be one of the best stocked pro shop I have ever been in and at reasonable prices too.The course is over 6200 yards long and offers some challenging holes, the greens are well maintained and the fairways an absolute dream. Ashton Under Lyne Golf Course is almost 100 years and this is evident as you play a round of golf, the maturity of the trees that line the fairways adds to the beauty of this course and also add another dimension to its challenges. After playing a round of golf, the club house offers excellent facilities further enhanced by the friendly staff that are happy to serve you excellent home cooked food and very reasonable prices. All in all I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this club to anyone wishing to try a new challenge.Paul Brunt.

Played the course this afternoon. Very wet but aren`t they all at the moment. I imagine its a nice course to play when the weathers nice. Quite forgiving so long as you don`t get too wild. Will definately return.
